Origin: Europe, Western Asia.
Botanical characteristics: It is a large deciduous tree with rounded crown and can reach 40 meters in height. It has arching and pendulous branches overboard. Leaves are broadly ovate, toothed, up to 15 cm long and at the base they are asymmetric enough to cover the short stalk. They are also equipped with 12-18 secondary nerves on each side and are rough and dark green on the upper surface, lighter and with tufts of white down on the under one. It has flowers in red inflorescences in March, on bare branches. It has elliptical samaras with the seed in the centre.
Agronomic and environmental characteristics: Spontaneous on deciduous forests up to 1200 meters. It grows well on any soil, if well-drained. It has a good resistance to air pollution.
Use: It is cultivated as ornamental plant and used in parks and large gardens as individual exemplary and along avenues. It is excellent for the exposed areas, including the marine ones. It is suitable to reforest hilly and mountainous areas.
